Mānuka honey is commonly graded using MGO or UMF™. Both help you compare products, but they measure and certify different things.
What does MGO mean?
MGO states the measured concentration of methylglyoxal in milligrams per kilogram of honey. A higher number represents a higher measured concentration.
What does UMF™ mean?
UMF™ is an independent certification system that checks identity, quality and New Zealand origin. Only licensed producers may use the UMF™ mark.
A practical way to choose
- Lower grades are a friendly introduction for everyday enjoyment.
- Middle grades offer a more distinctive profile and remain the most popular choice.
- Higher grades are scarcer, more intense and priced accordingly.
Mānuka honey is a food, not a medicine. Grade claims do not replace medical advice. Always check the manufacturer label, jar size and exact multipack contents before purchasing.
